Inside the 2UR-GSE: Toyota’s V8 Masterpiece

Toyota and Yamaha turned the 2UR-GSE into a high-revving naturally aspirated V8 with dual injection, tuned acoustics, and serious motorsport credibility.

First introduced in 2007 with the Lexus IS F, the 2UR-GSE is a 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 developed by Toyota with engineering input from Yamaha, primarily for high-performance Lexus models like the IS F, RC F, GS F, LC 500, and IS 500 F Sport.

It features a 90-degree V8 with an oversquare bore and stroke of 94.0mm x 89.5mm, optimized for high revs. The all-aluminum engine uses Toyota’s D-4S dual-injection system, which combines direct and port fuel injection.

Dual VVT-i, with electrically controlled VVT-iE on the intake side, optimizes valve timing. The compression ratio varies slightly by application: 11.8:1 in the IS F and 12.3:1 in later models like the RC F and LC 500.

Depending on the model and year, the engine produces between 416 and 475hp and 371 to 398 lb-ft of torque. Redline ranges from 6,800 to 7,300 rpm, and the engine weighs approximately 224kg, or 493lb.

Key engineering highlights include Yamaha-designed high-flow cylinder heads and titanium intake valves, which reduce weight and allow greater valve lift. The engine block is aluminum with cast-iron liners, and forged internals ensure strength under high loads.

A dual-length intake manifold and a switchable intake track improve torque delivery across the rev range. The main bearing caps use a racing-style four-bolt design for added rigidity.

The 2UR-GSE is not just powerful, but also engineered for a distinctive character. Its intake and exhaust systems are acoustically tuned with the help of Yamaha to deliver a refined yet aggressive sound.

A modified 5.4L version of this engine has also been used in motorsport, including in the Lexus RC F GT3.

The 2UR-GSE stands as Toyota’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8: a characterful, old-school engine in an age dominated by turbocharging and electrification.
